Rafters vs. Joists: How Roof and Ceiling Framing Work Together

How the system works
Roof loads travel through rafters or trusses to bearing walls, beams, and foundations. Ceiling joists may tie opposing walls or support finishes, while floor joists carry occupied floor loads. Connections are as important as member size.
Rafter ties are not collar ties
Rafter ties are located low in the roof framing and help resist outward wall thrust. Collar ties are higher and serve a different purpose related to separation near the ridge. Their size, spacing, and need depend on the design.
Common alteration risks
Removing joists, cutting rafters, relocating braces, or installing attic equipment without a plan can interrupt the load path. Notches, holes, decay, and improvised repairs should be evaluated in context.
