Are Open Grounds Dangerous?

During a home inspection, the home inspector will be checking outset receptacles for defects such as open ground. This is a quick article about open grounds.

As we are moving along the home and completing the inspection we will be using a tool to test outlets. The most common tool looks like the one below.

How much do outlet testers cost?

An outlet tester can cost between $10 – $400. There is a wide range in the sophistication of these tools. The one above costs $15 at Amazon. A person without electrical experience can use this tool to test outlets. If you need to complete repairs you should consider hiring a qualified contractor. So what does a fancy outlet tester look like?

The tester will be checking for the following issues that can be happening:

  1. Open Ground
  2. Open Neutral
  3. Open Hot
  4. Hot/Ground Reversed
  5. Correct

A fancier or more sophisticated outlet tester would be this one that I like to keep handy. We have both because these outlet tester like the one above does not catch false grounds. There is no better inspection for this than you eyes, a qualified person should remove the outlet in question and perform a visual inspection to determine if there is a false ground present.

What is an open ground?

An open ground means that the safe path is not complete. This should be fixed. Your three-prong outlet receptacle is not connected to the grounding conductor. An open ground can be dangerous because a power surge can travel to persons or equipment rather than traveling back to the earth.
