Bradford White Water Heater Age: Reading the Serial Number

Bradford White serial numbers use coded letters to indicate the year and month of manufacture, but model records and repeated code cycles require context.

The data plate provides the serial number, model, fuel or electrical information, capacity, ratings, and certification details. Record a clear photo before interpreting the date code.

Important: Date-code systems and label formats can change. Confirm uncertain results with Bradford White documentation or the manufacturer, especially when code cycles overlap.

Find the complete data plate

Look on the tank jacket or manufacturer-designated label area. Dirt, paint, corrosion, insulation, or poor access may make the information difficult to read.

Do not remove covers or disturb energized or fuel-burning components to find a label.

Understand the letter code

Bradford White commonly uses the first serial letter for the year and the second for the month. Letters are reused in cycles, so the equipment style and installation history help distinguish decades.

Avoid relying on a partial serial number or a generic chart without verifying the manufacturer.

Age is not condition

A newer heater can leak or be installed incorrectly, while an older unit may remain serviceable. Inspect the tank, valves, venting, combustion air, electrical supply, drain pan, piping, and temperature-pressure relief system.

Manufacture date is useful for planning but does not predict the exact failure date.

Plan replacement before failure

Consider location, leak consequences, efficiency, fuel type, household demand, access, permits, and current installation requirements.

Keep invoices and installation records so future owners can verify replacement history.

Warning signs to address

  • Rust or active tank leakage
  • Corroded fittings
  • Improper relief-valve discharge
  • Backdrafting or vent damage
  • Missing pan or unsafe location

What a home inspection can document

A home inspector can document the visible label, approximate age, installation, operation, leakage, venting, and safety concerns. Warranty status and concealed tank condition are not verified.

A visual inspection cannot predict every failure or replace evaluation by the appropriately licensed specialist. It can identify visible concerns, explain why they matter, and help buyers and homeowners plan qualified follow-up.
