Knocking Plumbing Pipes: Water Hammer and Shock Absorbers

A sharp bang after a valve closes is often called water hammer. An arrestor may help, but loose piping, excessive pressure, failing valves, and other causes should be diagnosed before adding a device.

Water moving through a pipe has momentum. When a quick-closing appliance valve or faucet suddenly stops that flow, a pressure wave can travel through the plumbing and create a bang, thump, or vibration. Repeated shock can stress fittings, supply hoses, valves, and pipe supports.

What Causes Pipes to Knock?

  • Fast-closing solenoid valves at washing machines, dishwashers, and ice makers.
  • Loose or poorly supported piping striking framing.
  • Excessive or fluctuating water pressure.
  • A failing pressure-reducing valve, check valve, or fixture valve.
  • Thermal expansion in a closed plumbing system.
  • Air, sediment, or worn components producing a different type of noise.

Not every plumbing noise is water hammer. Ticking can come from thermal movement, chatter from a loose washer or valve, and continuous vibration from pressure-control equipment.

What Is a Water-Hammer Arrestor?

A water-hammer arrestor contains a sealed air or gas chamber separated from the water. It absorbs part of the pressure surge when flow stops quickly. Modern listed arrestors are different from homemade vertical air chambers, which can fill with water and lose effectiveness.

Where Are Arrestors Commonly Installed?

They are commonly placed near quick-closing valves, including washing-machine supplies, dishwashers, and ice makers. The correct type, size, orientation, and location depend on the piping and manufacturer instructions. Installing a device far from the source may not correct the problem.

Why Diagnosis Comes First

An arrestor cannot secure loose pipe, lower excessive static pressure, repair a failing valve, or correct an expansion problem. A plumber may measure pressure, reproduce the noise, inspect accessible supports, and determine which fixture triggers it.

Safe Checks for Homeowners

  • Note which fixture or appliance was operating when the noise occurred.
  • Check for visible leakage at accessible connections.
  • Do not keep operating an appliance if hoses or fittings move violently.
  • Avoid opening walls or adjusting pressure controls without proper evaluation.
  • Have recurring or worsening noise assessed by a licensed plumber.

What a Home Inspector Checks

During a buyer home inspection, the inspector operates representative fixtures and appliances when conditions permit and reports apparent leakage, abnormal noise, excessive movement, or visible installation concerns. A visual inspection cannot verify every concealed pipe support or predict future pressure events.
