Stay Alert, Stay Safe: How to Avoid An Alligator Attack in Florida

Unfortunately, the latest alligator attack was the recent death of a fellow Floridian woman who was 85 years old walking her dog and fell victim to an alligator attack. Our condolences to the family. I’ve only lived in Florida for the past 10 years but one of my fears has been running into an alligator so one of the first things I did after purchasing my home added a solid gate around the property.

But of course, there are times when we are walking past water with our dog and are at risk. We were walking down the street and one crossed the 200 meters in front of us. Yes, we turned around and went in the other direction. I want to hopefully help keep another family member or pet safe by sharing some tips to avoid an alligator attack in Florida.

Florida’s beautiful weather and natural scenery attract millions of tourists every year, but it’s important to remember that the state is home to many dangerous animals. One such animal is the alligator, which can be found in many areas of Florida’s waterways. Alligator attacks are rare, but it’s crucial to be informed and prepared to avoid them.

Alligator Behavior First, it’s essential to understand how alligators behave. Alligators are generally shy and will typically avoid humans. However, they can become aggressive if they feel threatened or if they are protecting their young. Alligators may also become territorial during the breeding season, which is from April to June. To avoid alligator attacks, it’s important to recognize when they are behaving aggressively. Signs of an aggressive alligator include hissing, lunging, and bellowing. If you see these behaviors, move away from the area immediately.
